Dr. Paul H. Sugarbaker

 

Curriculum vitae


Paul H. Sugarbaker was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 28, 1941.  He graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois obtaining a BS in Chemistry in 1963.  In 1967 he graduated from Cornell University Medical College in New York and joined the Surgical Residency Program at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston where he eventually served as the Surgical Chief Resident in 1973.  He completed his Surgical Fellowship Training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1976.  At the same time he was a Research Trainee in Basic Surgical Sciences at the Massachusetts General Hospital.  In 1983 he graduated with a Masters Degree in Immunology at Harvard University.  From 1976 to 1986 he was Senior Investigator of the Surgery Branch at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.  From 1981 to 1986 he also served as Head of the Colorectal Cancer Section.  In 1986 he was appointed as the Director of Surgical Oncology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.  In 1989 he returned to Washington, DC and became the Medical Director of the Washington Cancer Institute.  From 1993 up to the present time he has been the Director of Surgical Oncology at the Washington Cancer Institute.

Dr. Sugarbaker is a mentor, investigator, and has lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally, earning numerous awards and citations.  Clinically he is best known for his expertise in gastrointestinal oncology and colorectal cancer surgery and in rare diseases such as pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal mesothelioma, abdominal sarcomas, and peritoneal carcinomatosis.  He has formulated specialty treatment procedures such as cytoreductive surgery with heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy and hyperthermia treatments using the Thermotron RF-8.  He has published more than 700 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, numerous book chapters and textbooks.  He is a member of four different editorial boards.

Dr. Sugarbaker is a member of several medical societies such as the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, University Surgeons, American Association of Cancer Research, International Association for Enterostomal Therapy, American Surgical Association, and was Founding Member for International Society of Regional Cancer Therapy and Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

Because of his long-standing dedication and contribution to the field of cancer surgery he was awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa at the Universite de Liege, Belgium in March 1999 and the Fellowship ad eundem at The Royal College of Surgeons of England in September 1999.
